We are delighted to have begun resuming our Out2Play sessions. We are following national guidelines to keep us all safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes limiting numbers. To make this possible, Out2Play sessions will run with a sign-up and session booking process for the time being. We’ll also be changing some of the spaces we use for sessions.
Out2Play ordinarily runs at the following times and sites:
Monday – Allen Terrace/Gibraltar Road (Dalkeith), 3:30-5pm
Tuesday – Bonnybank Play Area (Gorebridge), 3:30-5pm
Thursday – Oak Crescent Park (Mayfield), 3:30-5pm
Friday – Thornybank Square (Dalkeith), 1:00-2:30pm
Please note that the Gorebridge and Mayfield sites are likely to change to help us limit numbers. Additionally, the Allen Terrace session may move to a Wednesday.
To sign-up for Out2Play sessions, to ensure you receive the up-to-date information and so that you can book specific sessions, please click on the below button, which will take you to our sign-up form.
The sessions are aimed at children living near the above greenspaces, encouraging outdoor play close to home. The sessions reduces safety concerns around playing out and build positive connections in the community.
Our community playworkers take all sorts of resources, including sports equipment, craft materials and loose parts (such as large pieces of fabric, crates and guttering). Children have the opportunity to take part in wide-ranging opportunities including using fire bowls, den-building and messy play.
Children can play as they choose, for as long as they want to stay at the session. The sessions are drop-in (not childcare) and children are free to come and go from the public spaces. The playworkers may need to leave a session before the advertised end time, due to, for example, bad weather or safety concerns. If this happens, it is expected children will know what to do.
If parents/carers are happy for their child(ren) to be responsible for themselves they can attend without an adult. Otherwise an adult should attend the sessions with the child(ren) - and are always welcome to join in the fun. Children under five should always be accompanied by an adult. However, please note that due to our current need to limit numbers, participation is limited to children aged 5+.
Adults who drop their child(ren) off at a session and plan to pick them up later must be aware that they are still responsible for their child(ren) at all times. When children are unaccompanied during the session we will always assume this is because parents/carers are happy for their child(ren) to take responsibility for themselves to play in their local greenspace.
